Lake Kivu, one of Africa’s largest and most stunning freshwater lakes, sits on Rwanda’s western border along the Albertine Rift Valley, shared with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Spanning approximately 2,700 sq. km, it stretches 90 km in length and 50 km in width, with a depth of 475 m, making it the 8th deepest lake in the world. The lake feeds the Rusizi River, which flows into Lake Tanganyika, and is dotted with islands, including the remarkable Idjwi Island.
